Tamil Nadu's biryani market is thriving, boasting a ₹10,000 crore valuation. This growth is fueled by both organized and unorganized sectors, with Chennai leading the charge. Innovative startups and established brands are seizing the opportunity, promising a flavorful future for biryani lovers.

Tamil Nadu's vibrant biryani market is experiencing a delicious boom, reaching an impressive ₹10,000 crore valuation, signaling substantial economic activity and consumer demand. The food business in Tamil Nadu is thriving, with the organized market contributing ₹2,500 crore and the unorganized sector exceeding ₹7,500 crore. Chennai stands out as the largest market, generating 50% of the total biryani business.

Prominent players like Dindigul Thalappakatti, Junior Kuppanna, and Buhari, among others, are leading the charge, alongside a vast network of mid-sized establishments and countless street vendors, ensuring the widespread availability of this beloved dish. "The primary regions known for biryani in Tamil Nadu are the Kongu region, as well as the Ambur and Dindigul regions, each offering unique styles and flavors," explains Balachandar R., executive director, Junior Kuppanna.

Notably, Dindigul Thalappakatti, a major player with 65 outlets across Tamil Nadu, sells around 5,000 to 6,000 kg of biryani daily, with numbers increasing during festivals and weekends, according to Managing Director Sathish D. Nagasamy. This demonstrates the brand's strong market presence and consistent customer appeal. While established brands thrive, the unorganized market is also experiencing year-on-year growth, indicating a broad and expanding consumer base.

Innovation is also playing a key role in the biryani market's expansion. Chennai-based start-up Cookd is successfully selling approximately 30,000 Biryani kits every month, enabling around 100,000 people to prepare their favorite dish. "We wanted to build a product that people could use almost every week, and in most of the households, biryani is a weekend ritual. This influenced us to create our biryani kits," said Aathitiyan, founder and CEO, Cookd, highlighting the company's customer-centric approach.

Even masala brands are jumping on the bandwagon, with plans to introduce new biryani masala packs in the coming year, further demonstrating the market's vast potential and the increasing opportunities for entrepreneurs. Whether enjoyed from a roadside stall or a high-end restaurant, biryani in Tamil Nadu is more than just a meal; it is a cherished culinary experience, promising continued growth and satisfaction for food lovers.
